For many of us, a first date can be a very nerve wrecking experience! Our initial tendency is to initiate small talk, and avoid conversation topics that may create tension. Small talk can be a great way to get a feel for someone, but you may leave the date not feeling like you got to know each other. You also want to avoid ‘grilling’ someone or appearing desperate by demanding they tell you if they still have college debt, or probing them for baby name ideas for your first born.

Here are ten questions to ask your date that will allow you to get to know them, without pushing them away.

1. What part of your personality do you take the most pride in?
2. What is the weirdest thing about you?
3. You've just been told you have a few months to live, what do you do?
4. If you could pick only one which would you be: attractive, rich or smart?
5. If you could change something about yourself, what would it be?
6. What's your favorite thing to do on a Saturday night?
7. Are you spontaneous, or do you like to have a plan?
8. What do you like best about being single?
9. How is/was your relationship with your parents?
10. Describe yourself in three words.
